Vintage Japanese Eyedropper Fountain Pen. These pens were very popular during the first half of the 1900's, but fell out of major use due to the invention of automatic filling systems. However, they still maintained a niche interest during the second half of the 1900's and even till today. This pen is marked with "The Pride" and Miyakonojo on the barrel. These engravings are likely where the pen was made. Miyakonojo is a city in Southern Japan. The pen is equipped with a steel Warranted Iridium tipped Ideal number 4 sized nib. The lack of a JIS stamp, as well as the steel nib, indicate that this pen was likely produced during WWII or shortly after, as it was prohibited to use gold in fountain pens during the war. Please note an engraving from the previous owner on the barrel.
These pens were designed as eyedroppers, meaning ink was stored directly in the barrel without cartridges or converters. A key feature was the shutoff valve, a small mechanism that prevented ink from leaking during use or travel. This valve allowed users to seal the ink reservoir, ensuring a steady flow only when writing, which addressed issues like burping or dripping often seen in traditional eyedropper pens.
This pen has had the worn out, original cork shutoff valve seal replaced with o-rings. Providing a great alternative to prevent leaks near the back of the pen. 90 day warranty on service work.
