Montblanc test marketed the VIP fountain pen in 1973. The company decided a slimmer pen was needed in the line-up. Following the successful test, Montblanc launch the Noblesse series of pens in 1974. Production continued through 1985. The second generation Noblesse was launched in 1986.

The first generation Noblesse was offered in a variety of finished including brushed stainless steel, smooth silver plate, smooth gold plate, silver plate chased pinstripe and gold plate chased pinstripe. The Noblesse became known in Montblanc's materials as the jeweler's pens or jewelry styled manufacturing. Other than the stainless steel model, bodies were made of brass. Most first generation Noblesse were fitted with a 14k nib marked simply "585" but were also offered with a "MB" marked stainless steel nib. Ebonite feeds were fitted to the nibs. The Noblesse nibs lived up to the Montblanc name and are wonderful writers.
