The Pilot Custom 74 was launched in 1992 the 74th anniversay of Pilot. With the Custom 74, Pilot changed the nibs of their product line up to more closely match the current writing. Ballpoints had become dominate and writing pressure increased. The Custom 74 nib was stiffer than previous Pilot nibs to accommodate the changes in writing style. 

There were eight types of nibs offered at launch. Three additional nibs were added in 1998. The Custom 74 can be found with nibs in the following sizes: EF, F, SF, FM, SFM, M, B, BB, C, MS.
