Gonroku Matsuda, the highest authority on maki-e, was invited to the company now know as Pilot in 1926. In 1931, Matsuda brought together a group of artists from both within and outside the company. This group of maki-e masters set out to improve the quality of maki-e fountain pens. Matsuda and one of Pilot's founders, Ryosuke Namiki, named the group Kokkokai which means National Light Society. The name was derived from the belief that maki-e was the light of the country.

Gonroku Matsuda was awarded the title of Living National Treasure in 1955.

Maki-e fountain pens are signed. The right column in gold, usually reads "Supervised by Namiki." The highest level maki-e fountain pens include the artist signature or personal seal in red to the left.

This pen features an 18k Gold Script nib. The pen is signed in red. Artist is unknown.
