Founded in 1919, Platinum has been producing high quality fountain pens for over 100 years. They are considered one of the "Big Three" of Japanese major pen manufacturing. Platinum holds that title alongside Pilot and Sailor, producing some of the highest quality fountain pens in Japan.
Beginning in the late 1960s, Platinum offered a line of sheepskin wrapped leather pens. The pens were offered in solid black as well as other molted colors. The line also included several floral patterns. In 1973, Platinum launched the Amazonas line with pen bodies wrapped in the skin of the Surinam toad. This was followed by the exotic skin series that included pens wrapped in exotic leathers. Leathers in the series were snake, lizard, crocodile and shark.
Platinum nibs are usually made out of 18K gold, but can sometimes be found with 14K, 22K, and even 23K gold in pens produced at the height of the karat wars. They are marked with Chinese symbols known as "Kanji" which indicate the nib size. By translating these symbols, we can properly determine the nib size of each pen.
