While there is little definitive information available about Seiko watches with Ukiyo-e dials, the practice appears to have begun in the late 1960s and 1970s. Some Seiko retailers were modifying the watches as a form of practice for watchmakers. The dial was modified with all applied text, indices, and hands removed. A Ukiyo-e image from a stamps was then applied to the dial and the applied text, indices, and hands were replaced. The result was a striking Seiko dial while also teaching a skill to watchmakers.

The initial stamps used to make the Ukiyo-e dials came from an 11 part series issued by Japan Post Co from 1955 to 1965. Other stamps have since been used to decorate these Seiko dials.
