Montblanc test marketed the VIP fountain pen in 1973. The company decided a slimmer pen was needed in the line-up. Following the successful test, Montblanc launched the Noblesse series of pens in 1974. Production continued through late 90's. The first generation was produced from its launch in '74 till 1981 when the second generation was introduced.

The SlimLine was introduced alongside the Noblesse First Generation as a more affordable alternative. It featured a very similar design with a few key differences. Mainly, the clip featured a small Montblanc Star at the end. The pen was also equipped with a rhodium plated steel nib rather than 14K gold.
