In the Fall of '71, the 3800 Series of Seiko Quartz watches were released. This marked the beginning of mass-produced stepper-motor quartz watches. The 3823A was the pinnacle of high-accuracy time keeping. It featured 7 jewels and was adjusted to 6 positions. It was also temperature compensated and was equipped with anti-magnetic shields under the dial and caseback. All of this came together to a movement which boasted an accuracy rating of just +/- 5 seconds per month. However, this feat of engineering came at a price. Retailing at 150,000 Japanese Yen in 1971, the V.F.A. Quartz was equivalent to about $3,200 U.S. Dollars in today's money.
