The Pilot "Custom" Elite is the original Pilot Elite. Released in the mid 1960's, the Elite was originally a full sized, balance-style pen. It is often referred to as the "Custom Elite" due to the nib imprint which reads "CUSTOM." This also helps differentiate between the more known Elite S pocket pens which bear the same name. It came in three main finishes; checkered sterling silver, checkered rolled 14K gold, and a standard black resin. These pens were the precursor to the Art Craft Silvern series released by Namiki in 1969.

This pen has a nib date code of 1070, indicating October 1970 as its date of production. The barrel and cap were produced in March of 1971. It is not uncommon to see a gap like this as the nibs were produced on a different line than the rest of the pen.
