Seiko's Superior range of quartz watches was launched in 1974. It was the top-of-the-line offering for both the quartz line as well as the overall Seiko line. The Seiko Superior was certified by Japan's Chonometer Certification Organization as AAAA status, the highest rank at the time. The first in the line of the Seiko Superior offering was the 3883. It was priced at 220,000 yen. For comparison, Grand Seiko's top mechanical watch was priced at 50,000 yen. The Seiko Superior 3883 was rated at +/- 2 seconds per month and introduced a new standard for accuracy.

In 1976, the Seiko Superior 4883 replaced the 3883. The new reference introduced two new features. The second will automatically set itself to the next 10 second marker upon hacking the watch. The movement also has an end-of-life indicator for the battery. The second "jumps" when the battery is low indicating a replacement is needed. Seiko reduced the price of the 4883 to 180,000 yen, but it was still priced well above any mechanical offerings. The Superior 4883 was rated at +/- 1 second per month.

In 1978, the third generation of the Seiko Superior was launched. It featured a twin thermocompensated quartz movement. The 9983 Superior was rated at an previously unheard of +/- 5 seconds per year. For comparison, the Grand Seiko 9F quartz movement (a descendent of the Superior line) is rated at +/- 10 seconds per year.

Seiko has always been know for their dials. The Superior line is no exception. The dials are beautiful and wonderfully finished. There are applied indicies at every minute with cut applied indicies at the 5 minute marks in which the minute and second hands sweep through. Along with the textured dial, it gives a feeling of depth not found in other watches.

Fitted with a new silver oxide battery. The watch comes with a one year battery warranty.
